From cargo cult leader to church planter
October 22
A former cargo cult leader from Bali Island, West New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, is establishing a new Seventh-day Adventist church in his home village after graduating from the Layman Training School under the New Britain New Ireland Mission (NBNI).
Leo Linge was among more than 30 graduates who received certificates in layman training on October 15 at Kulungi, West New Britain Province.
Mr Linge committed his life to Jesus during the 2024 PNG for Christ evangelistic campaign, leaving a cargo cult movement. Such movements, found in parts of the Pacific, are often associated with beliefs that spiritual practices or rituals can bring material wealth and goods.
Most members of his former group also left the movement and embraced the Adventist faith.
Following his baptism, Mr Linge took another step in his spiritual journey by enrolling at the Layman Training School. His training equipped him with a stronger biblical foundation and prepared him for leadership and missionary service in his community.
NBNI Mission secretary Pastor Richard Koroi praised God for the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in Mr Linge’s life.
“Today, his life reflects true discipleship and leadership, guiding others to follow Jesus and leaving behind the cargo cult practices,” Pastor Koroi said.
Work has begun on the new church, which is being built in Mr Linge’s home village of Rukaboroko, on Bali Island, with the support of church members and the local community. It will be named Harrison Branch Church in honour of pioneer Pastor Harrison.—Trevor Maino
